In 2016, musician Simon Gall and music agent Susan Whyte formed Other Music Promotions (OMP) in Aberdeen to promote concerts showcasing contemporary folk music from around the world. The organisation was created in response to a lack of this kind of programming in the city and in the knowledge that there was a healthy audience for these styles.
In the beginning, OMP received funding from Scottish Traditional Music development body Hands Up for Trad and Aberdeen City Council. These funds were used to build interest and audiences by staging 14 concerts across 2016 and 17 featuring some of the UK’s top acts such as McCusker, McGoldrick and Doyle, The Chair, The Old Blind Dogs, George Monbiot and Ewan MacLennan, Nordic Fiddler’s Bloc and many others. High audience numbers and a the general public enthusiasm for our work haas given us the confidence to forge ahead with the creation of a festival.
In 2017, we secured further funding from Aberdeen City Council and began to work with host other partners including Aberdeen Performing Arts, Aberdeen International Youth Festival, Jazz at the Blue Lamp, The Polish Association Aberdeen, Aberdeen Multicultural Centre and others to put together a pilot festival in April 2018. At the time of writing, we are in the process of finalising the details of our first festival and are extremely excited about the line-up. We hope you like it!
